AI Project Lands Students 2nd Place in Europe

In January this year, two students from our school entered a European STEM competition- the AI in STEM competition by Science on Stage.
Their idea is to use Predictive AI (PAI) to prevent illegal fishing by using patterns, probabilities and algorithms. After a lot of research, trial and error, the students were able to create a successful AI model which predicts where and when illegal fishing is most likely to occur, in the hope of stopping it.
With this innovative project, the students entered the STEM competition, where they made it to the top 10 applicants across 18 countries. Sophie and Harry were then invited to Berlin, Germany to present their ideas to an international jury and public. The Mayor of Berlin then announced the PAI team to be 1 of 3 winners, placing 2nd overall in the competition.
The PAI team states ‘This is only the start’ as they hope to produce a successful app and system to release to the world- to keep shorelines safe and biodiversity protected.
