The Thomas Hardye School

Rotary Young Chef Competition

Young Chef

Earlier this month, Olivia Lovell in 11KM represented the school in the District final of the Rotary Young Chef competition, held at Burnham –on-Sea.

She produced some fantastic restaurant quality food, including a starter of pheasant and pigeon Scotch egg with a wasabi mayo and wasabi leaf salad, followed by a beef wellington slice with a stock mashed potato and local roast heritage carrots, followed by a passion fruit cheesecake served with ginger brittle tuilles and a passion fruit and mango sauce.

Her emphasis was on seasonal produce with strong flavours, which obviously impressed the judges, as she was one of three students of the nine competing to go through to the next round, to be held in Taunton on 17 March.  Very well done to Olivia, completing all these dishes in two hours available was no mean feat, showing commitment, lots of hard work and the ability to work well under pressure.

We wish her lots of luck in the Regional final next month.

UPDATE: With flurries of snow and bitterly cold weather, eight young chefs from the South West Region travelled to  Bridgwater and Taunton College to compete in the Regional Final of Rotary Young Chef competition, with Olivia Lovell in year 11 representing Thomas Hardye School.

Olivia did us proud with her seasonal menu of  pheasant and pigeon Scotch egg with a wasabi mayo and wasabi leaf salad, followed by a beef wellington slice with a stock mashed potato and local roast heritage carrots, with by a passion fruit cheesecake served with ginger brittle tuilles and a passion fruit and mango sauce to finish.

Unfortunately, her efforts were not enough to get through to the National final, but we were all very impressed with her enthusiasm, dedication and good humour that she brought to the competition.

We wish Olivia every success in her GCSE's and future career, a brilliant achievement in one so young.
