Scholars cup cook-off

Cook off

On a very warm afternoon recently, nine students from years 9 and 10 took part in the first Scholars cup cook-off.  Their task was to produce two dishes that use seasonal fruit or vegetables, with all students choosing to make a main course and dessert, within two hours.

Kai Trevett from Stratford, won first prize for year 9, with his main course of crispy sea bass with pea puree, tomato salsa and roasted baby carrots, followed by summer pudding with blow-torched meringue.

In the year 10 category, Olivia Lovell and Isabella White representing Henning, won first prize with their menu of lobster linguine with home -made pasta, served with a tomato and white wine sauce, followed by a delicious dessert of white chocolate and raspberry profiteroles, white chocolate crumb and raspberry coulis.

A special mention also, to George Green and Rory Gaukroger for the best year 9 dessert, a concoction of light orange sponge, layered with orange flavoured mascarpone, and summer fruits.

A big thank you goes to chef/owner Jamie Jones from Yalbury Cottage who offered his services as a judge, summing up by saying how impressed he was with everyone’s enthusiasm and calmness during the afternoon.  He also gave tips on presentation and choice of ingredients and kindly invited the winners to observe him in his professional kitchen during service.

Thank you and congratulations to all those who took part.  It was inspiring to see the students clearly enjoying the experience, despite the heat of the classroom and the pressure of creating two dishes in such a short time.
