The Thomas Hardye School

Sixth Formers hear story of genuine historical document

Ulster Covenant

Today some of our year 12s were pleased to welcome Ben Dugri’s Grandfather into Thomas Hardye School to speak with the students about his original signed copy of the Ulster Covenant, which belonged to and was signed by Ben’s great-great-grandfather!

The students are currently studying Irish history as part of the modern history A Level and so it was wonderful for them to hear the personal story of George who was so committed to the Unionist cause that he signed the document in his own blood!

The students were able to hear both unionist and nationalist views from our visitor Mr. Jennings and students were able to gain perspective on why the Union was such a divisive and personal issue to many Irish people at the time.

A great day for our budding historians!
