Year 12 Classics student receives a ‘Highly Commended’ Award for Fitzwilliam College Essay Writing Competition

Congratulations to Bethan Miller in 12LM! Bethan has received a ‘Highly Commended’ accolade for her Classics essay from Fitzwilliam College at the University of Cambridge. ¬†Bethan discovered the competition online and wrote an essay entitled, ‘Political Freedom in Classical Athens: a consideration of the modern concept of human rights in conjunction with an exploration of political privilege and legal status in Athens during the 5th century B.C.’

Having shared her work with Mr Ayre, her Classics teacher, Bethan entered the competition which encourages talented students to explore interests in the Ancient World, Classics and Land Economy beyond the school curriculum.

The Director of Studies in Classics, Dr Sara Owen, e-mailed Mr Ayre personally to let him know how impressed they were with Bethan’s essay. Bethan also attended the prize-giving event on April 23rd at Fitzwilliam College and was awarded a certificate and a ¬£25 book token. She thoroughly enjoyed the day which included a tour of the College from a 4th year Classics student.

Well done Bethan!
